In the Name Of...
This project is an ongoing exploration of alternative and intimate religious, social and cultural practices in the name of belief or faith.
In some cases, in the name of society and appearances.
Part I is a short series from a site for slaughtering sheep and other domestic cattle in Amman, Jordan (2018). This practice takes place over four days during the "Eid Adha" Muslim feast. Those who have the means, choose to slaughter livestock to consume meat and give the rest to the poor. This is done in the name of the Muslim faith, following the footsteps of prophet Abraham and his attempt to slaughter his son Ismail in the name of his belief in God.
Part II is from Goa, India (2019), where I explored intimate forms of practicing Christianity at the community level in various parts of the state (2019). The story includes photographs from Saint Francis Xavier feast in Old Goa; a seminary for young boys who intend to become priests in Saligao; an elderly home run and managed by nuns and the confirmation of a 15 year old boy named Harrison in the village of Aldona, north Goa.
Part II was executed under the supervision and mentoring by Magnum photographer Olivia Arthur.
